What is BPPV?

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) occurs when tiny calcium crystals (called otoconia) become dislodged in the inner ear and move into the wrong canal, disrupting your balance signals. This can cause sudden, intense dizziness (vertigo) triggered by head movements.

Common Symptoms & Challenges

  • Sudden, brief episodes of spinning sensations (vertigo)

  • Dizziness when changing positions (rolling in bed, looking up, bending over)

  • Feeling off-balance or unsteady when walking

  • Nausea or motion sensitivity triggered by movement

  • Symptoms lasting seconds to minutes before improving

Important: BPPV does NOT cause constant dizziness, headaches, hearing loss, or tingling. If you experience these symptoms, another condition may be the cause.

Misdiagnosis & Why an Expert Evaluation Matters

Many people are misdiagnosed with BPPV when their dizziness is actually caused by:

❌ Vestibular Migraines– Recurrent dizziness with headaches and light sensitivity

❌ Vestibular Neuritis/Labyrinthitis– Inner ear infections causing prolonged dizziness

❌ Orthostatic Hypotension– Blood pressure drops causing dizziness when standing

❌ Cervicogenic Dizziness– Neck-related balance issues

❌ Neurologic Conditions (Stroke, MS, Parkinson’s, Concussions, etc.)

Our specialists perform in-depth vestibular testing to confirm whether BPPV is truly the cause of your dizziness..

How Vestibular Therapy Helps

Vestibular rehabilitation is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment for dizziness and balance disorders not just BPPV. Our approach focuses on:

  • Canalith Repositioning (Example: Epley Maneuver for BPPV)– A guided technique to quickly resolve vertigo by repositioning displaced crystals in the inner ear.

  • Balance Training– Exercises to improve stability, posture, and coordination.

  • Gaze Stabilization Exercises– Helping you keep your vision steady while moving.

  • Motion Desensitization Therapy– Reducing dizziness triggered by head and body movements.

  • Strength & Fall Prevention Training– Improving overall mobility and reducing fall risks.
