What is Parkinson's Disease?
Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement control. It occurs when the brain's dopamine-producing cells start to degenerate, leading to problems with muscle control and coordination. While the exact cause isn't fully understood, genetics and environmental factors are believed to play a role.
Parkinson's primarily affects older adults, but it can develop earlier in life as well. Although it is a chronic condition, people with Parkinson's Disease can live long, fulfilling lives with proper treatment and care.
Common symptoms & challenges.
- Muscle stiffness and rigidity that may limit range of motion
- Dystonia — involuntary muscle spasms or twisting
- Postural instability, leading to an increased risk of falls
- Freezing of gait, where the feet feel stuck to the ground
- Speech changes such as a softer or slurred voice
- Changes in handwriting, often small or hard to read (micrographia)
- Balance issues, making it hard to stand or walk smoothly
- Non-motor symptoms: depression, fatigue, sleep, and cognition
How exercise & therapy can help.
There's no cure for Parkinson's, but exercise and physical therapy can significantly improve quality of life by managing symptoms and enhancing mobility. Regular activity helps reduce rigidity, improve balance, and ease slowness of movement. Therapy can also help with:
- Preventing falls by improving balance and coordination.
- Increasing strength to support independence and mobility.
- Addressing freezing of gait and improving walking.
- Reducing stiffness to enhance flexibility and range of motion.
- Improving mental well-being through activity, social interaction, and empowerment.
